Longing for Simpler Times

Diagnosis: New Millennium Blues

Prescription: 90s Rock Jams Mixtape

So let's face it, these are tough times we're living in. The Economy, Mortgage Crisis, Global Warming, Sneezing Pandas, Baby Cannibalism. I mean, this is some serious stuff.

And all of these challenges represent phenomena that are unique to the new millennium. We didn't know about this stuff back in the 90s, (or if we did we were at least pleasantly ignorant of them). But now all this stuff is right in front of us, we can't get away, and sometimes that can be some heavy stuff to deal with - especially on a Monday. As you can see from recent media sources below, the America we once knew and loved, is rapidly disappearing. It's enough to make you tear up a little even.

Which is why it's probably good to have a little dose of escapism every once in a while. So let me take you back to a simpler time when things just made more sense.

Before I introduce the tracks, I should acknowledge that I'm writing this post off-site from Chicago (where I'll be interviewin' it up on Tuesday), and that the inspiration for the playlist came from my last visit to the Chi back in October. My siblings and I were visiting the city for this race, and afterwards we hit up a bar for some food. So me, my sis, my bro montana, and my best buddy were sitting there enjoying some dinner and pleasant conversation, when this song comes on. At first, we burrly noticed it. A few measures of a soft guitar rift, then the bass line came in with the drums. We kept going on with our conversation as usual. But then the heavy guitars kicked in and the vocals erupted. We stopped what we were doing, we forgot whatever we were talking about. We knew we recognized the song, it was some 90s rock song and we even knew some of the words, but could NOT put our finger on it. We debated who it might be, started asking people from the waitstaff, even asked the DJ but it was just the house music playing on random so not even he knew what it was. That night, the mystery was never solved. All we knew is that it was truly a magical four minutes of music that defined a much better time in all of our lives that we may never hear of again.

And then I looked it up the next day and found out it was "In the Meantime" by Spacehog.

I hope to recreate that 90's bliss through the rest of these songs compiled with the crucial help of my buddy BD.

"In The Meantime" by Spacehog

"The World I Know" by Collective Soul

"Counting Blue Cars" by Dishwalla

"Tomorrow" by Silver Chair

"Hunger Strike" by Temple of the Dog

Enjoy the tunes and the nostalgia they induce,

-DR
